Saint-Paul-de-Vence
A walk along the village walls becomes an encounter with art.

Villa Ephrussi offers a rare combination: there is no need to choose between art and a walk. Look closely at porcelain and furniture, then step into the gardens, where the collection seems to continue through the pink façade, the pool and glimpses of sea. This is more than a photograph-friendly palace: it is part of Béatrice de Rothschild’s personal world.
Do not rush straight to the famous view. A rewarding visit moves between scales: a long garden axis, a small object in a room, an unexpected doorway detail. Luxury becomes less an abstract word than attention to how things belong together.
The villa was created for Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild between 1907 and 1912. Italian Renaissance architecture was an important reference, but stylistic purity was not the whole point: the house brought together an eclectic collection and a carefully imagined garden world.
In 1934 Béatrice left the property to the Académie des beaux-arts in memory of her father, Alphonse. A private residence gained a public cultural life. Visiting today means discovering a collector’s choices: what to preserve, where to place it and which view to reveal through a window.
The nine gardens are not nine identical green rooms. Changing plants and layouts alter the rhythm, from formal perspectives to more intimate spaces.
Explore the formal garden perspective towards the villa; move away from the busiest spot and compare a few viewpoints.
Alternate interiors and small collection objects with the gardens, rather than making the visit only a room-by-room marathon or a photo shoot.
Compare a view from inside the house with the same direction from the garden. Architecture acts as a frame for the landscape, rewarding an attentive eye.
For garden lovers, decorative-arts enthusiasts and couples who enjoy a leisurely, visually rich visit.
