Sanremo & Dolceacqua — an Italian escape

Sanremo • Bordighera • Dolceacqua • optional Menton

In just one day, we will exchange the French charm of the Côte d’Azur for the sunshine of the Italian Riviera: the sea, flowers, historic lanes, Italian gelato, art and a leisurely lunch by the water.

I will pick you up from your hotel, apartment or villa, and we will head to Sanremo — the celebrated city of flowers and Italian music. We will begin at the sanctuary of Madonna della Costa above the town, with magnificent views over Sanremo and the Ligurian Sea. Naturally, we will leave time for photographs and a photo session.

We will then descend into La Pigna, the historic heart of Sanremo: a maze of narrow passageways, staircases, arches and little squares. We will see the ancient Cathedral of San Siro, whose history reaches back to the Middle Ages, before gradually making our way into the elegant town centre.

We will stroll along the famous Via Matteotti, Sanremo’s main pedestrian street. Here you can enjoy a little shopping, stop for a coffee or try authentic Italian gelato. We will see the legendary Teatro Ariston, inseparably linked with the Sanremo Italian Song Festival.

We will drive along the seafront and see Villa Nobel — the villa Alfred Nobel bought in 1891, where he spent the final years of his life. We will then pause for a lovely Italian lunch by the sea or around Sanremo’s harbour.

After lunch, we will travel through charming Bordighera into an entirely different world: medieval Dolceacqua. Stone houses climb the hillside towards Doria Castle, while narrow caruggi conceal workshops, small galleries and wine shops. Spanning the river is the famous old bridge that captivated Claude Monet: the artist came here in 1884 and painted Dolceacqua and its castle.

We will walk through the old Téra quarter, browse little art shops, head uphill towards Doria Castle — a landmark at the heart of almost 900 years of the town’s history — and pause for a proper Italian coffee.

If time allows, we will stop in Menton on our return journey — the most “Italian” town on the French Riviera. We will explore its old centre and round off the day with Menton’s lemon flavours: ice cream and, if you wish, a lemon liqueur tasting.

The itinerary is completely flexible: more history, shopping, gastronomy, art or photo stops — we will adapt the programme to your pace.

  1. Set off for the Italian Riviera

I meet you at your hotel, villa or apartment. We follow the Mediterranean coast towards sunny Italy.

  2. Via Matteotti and Teatro Ariston

Sanremo’s main pedestrian street brings together Italian shops, cafés and gelato. We see the legendary Teatro Ariston, at the heart of the celebrated Italian song festival.

  1. Villa Nobel and Sanremo’s seafront

We drive along the sea, see Villa Nobel, where Alfred Nobel spent his final years, and enjoy the atmosphere of the Riviera of Flowers.
